Week 9 Web Resources: please make sure you visit the links on this page.
Lab Assignment: You will all have a lab that needs to be completed on site and two video-based entries to add to your hours of focused observation. Please disregard the face-to-face prompt if the students in your classroom are not addressing fractions yet. In addition, if your on-site hours are nearing completion, select the on-site prompt instead and watch the videos to enrich your knowledge base.
Children’s Literature Assignment: Rachel (computing with fractions) and Jason (decimals/percentages), with each focusing on a different part of this course’s content.
Week 8, 11/10/15
Science: Make sure you complete your “OSN” in this week’s folder – please submit your OSN for this week via your website.
Math Textbook: Re-read chapter 10’s sample lesson on page 232. Read chapter 11 in its entirety. Please pay special attention to renaming fractions when adding and subtracting them and how the process of multiplying and dividing fractions often yields interesting misconceptions around getting “bigger” or “smaller” numbers based on the operation used.
Week 8 Web Resources: please make sure you complete this page.
Lab Assignment: You will all have a lab that needs to be complete on site and another video-based to add to your hours of focused observation.
Children’s Literature Assignment: Rachel and Ryan – both focusing on computing with fractions.
Week 7, 11/03/15
Science: We will start engaging with physical science by talking about how to use inquiry-based questions to explore notions of motion, force and basic principles of physics to help children make connections between math and science.
Math Textbook Chapter 9: Please bring your books to class. We will read a portion that we didn’t read last class on division before we transition into fraction.
Math Textbook Chapter 10: It is crucial that you read chapter 10, and please take the pre-assessment on page 208 and report back to class.
Week 7 Web Resources: please make sure you complete this page.
Lab Assignment: You will all have a lab that needs to be complete on site – all of you have been placed in classrooms and have been able to connect with your hosting teachers. Next week, we will address how we can compensate late placements with videos and how to calculate time and work put into reacting to them as lab assignments.
Children’s Literature Assignment: Katie and Jayleese – both focusing on fractions.
Week 6, 10/27/15
Science Book: Pages 107 – 113. On page 110, you will notice a section called, “Discussion Questions.” There are three inquiry-based questions listed. Add a page in your OSN and title it “OSN #X: Surface Tension Questions” and list five different questions that you would consider asking children before, during and after this experiment. Remember to ask open ended questions. A good sample to use can be found here.
Math Textbook Chapter 7: Re-read pages 131 ( start at “types of addition and subtraction problems”) through 146.
Math Textbook Chapters 8: Whole Chapter
Math Textbook Chapter 9: We will read one portion of this chapter in class.
Week 6 Web Resources: please make sure you complete this page. I have added the same number talk video from last week – if you have time, please review it, if not, don’t worry. We will watch parts of it in class, if we have time.
Lab Assignment: You will develop a take-home kit based on what you have been observing in your placement. If you have not yet had significant time at your placement, use one of the videos from previous weeks (they can be found in the week’s folder, under the lab assignment tab, or under the week’s web resources folder.
Children’s Literature Assignment: Shawdee and Shilpa: based on either chapter 7 (whole number operations), 8 (Mastering basic facts), or 9 (Estimation and Computational Procedures for whole numbers).
Week 5, 10/20/15
Science Article: The Right Questions We will engage in an exercise in class that will help us distinguish between inquiry-based and open ended questions and closed ended questions. While it can seem obvious the difference between the two, understanding how to develop questions that invite students to develop critical thinking skills is crucial for their growth in schools. Even though we didn’t address this in last week’s class, Please re-read the article to refresh your memory before we use it in a case study using science content.
Textbook Chapter 7: entire chapter. Please revisit chapters 5 and 6.
Read the Common Core Math Standards and choose a standard, from grades 1 to 6 that best aligns with your interests at the moment in the teaching of mathematics.
Week 5 Web Resources: please make sure you complete this page. I have added the same number talk video from last week – if you have time, please review it, if not, don’t worry. We will watch parts of it in class, if we have time.
Lab Assignment: The fourth lab assignment will be completed on site and submitted via your website. If you still have not yet been placed, please contact me.
Children’s Literature Assignment: Shilpa (based on her assigned week) and Cameron Harrison (chapter 7).
Week 4, 10/13/15
Science Article: The Right Questions We will engage in an exercise in class that will help us distinguish between inquiry-based and open ended questions and closed ended questions. While it can seem obvious the difference between the two, understanding how to develop questions that invite students to develop critical thinking skills is crucial for their growth in schools.
Textbook Chapters 5 and 6. Chapter 5: entire chapter. Chapter 6: 99 to 107 (stop at “Type of place-value materials<” and page 122, “Estimating.”
Read the Common Core Math Standards and start thinking about which grade and standard(s) you are interested in using for your final unit plan as well as your game project. Proposals are due the following week, on 10/27/15. More details next class: bring your hard copy of the standards, or have an electronic version on you.
Week 4 Web Resources: please make sure you complete this page.
Lab Assignment: The third lab assignment will be completed in class, with a case study. Nonetheless, those who have a placement, will need to collect information following these guidelines:
- How many times were the students in this classroom engaged in counting?
- How many times were the students in this classroom engaged in estimating?
- Please write down examples of teachers using mathematical language to explain a concept during a math lesson.
Children’s Literature Assignment: We listened to Jen Bush two weeks ago. Please take some time to visit Jen’s website to revisit the book she chose to present. Next week, Lauren, Jaclyn and Cameron L will present.
Week 3, 10/6/15
Science Article: The Right Questions This will be especially helpful when we spend time interviewing our Gardner and Beekeeper guest, John Zonfrelli.
Textbook Chapter 4 – whole chapter.
Read the Common Core Math Standards and start thinking about which grade and standard(s) you are interested in using for your final unit plan as well as your game project. Proposals are due the following week, on 10/20/15. More details after next class.
Lab Assignment: Please complete the second lab assignment. If you are placed in a school before next class, watch the video to enrich your experience, but you do not need to submit your lab entry based on the video and class observations.
Children’s Literature Assignment: We listened to Jen Bush last week and there will be two students to present next week: Lauren and Jaclyn. Please take some time to visit Jen’s website to revisit the book she chose to present.
Week 2, 9/22/15
Science Texbook: this week, read Chapter 11 (pp 97 – 109): “Applying Simple Chromatography.”
Textbook Chapter 3 (pp 39 – 58).
